The Piping Foot #38—often called an “uneven foot”—features a uniquely designed sole with two different thicknesses. This clever design makes it especially useful when working with narrow to medium piping or sewing layers of fabric that aren’t perfectly even in thickness. By compensating for those variations, the foot helps your project feed smoothly under the needle for clean, professional-looking stitches.
Because the right side of the foot is slightly higher than the left, it easily glides over raised edges like piping cords or layered seams without distorting the fabric. Beyond piping, this versatile presser foot is also excellent for attaching thick tapes, decorative ribbons, cords, or hook-and-loop fasteners, giving you more control when sewing bulky trims.
Tip: When stitching tape, position the tape under the right (higher) side of the foot, aligning it with the edge of the thicker left side. This setup helps the needle catch the tape edge more precisely, resulting in a neat and secure seam.
